Chemists in Action: A Level Students Visit Guy’s Hospital Cancer Centre

This week our A Level Chemistry students had an incredible opportunity to visit Guy’s Hospital Cancer Centre, gaining fascinating insights into the world of medical science and pharmaceuticals. The day began with an informative presentation by Trainee Pharmacists and a student enrolled in the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) after completing a Chemistry degree.

Students then toured the Cancer Centre’s pharmacy, including the aseptic manufacturing unit, where an astonishing £3 million worth of chemotherapy drugs are prepared. Witnessing the precision and care involved in the manufacturing process gave Thames students a real appreciation of the complexity behind these life-saving treatments.

Throughout the visit, students were able to connect their classroom learning to real-world applications. They explored topics such as how the body reacts to drugs, how pharmaceuticals are modified to reduce rejection, and the rigorous steps involved in ensuring the quality and safety of the drugs produced.

This unforgettable experience brought Chemistry to life and inspired students to consider exciting career paths in science and healthcare.
