Brushing up on brilliance: Sixth Form A Level Students Immerse themselves in Masterpieces at Courtauld Gallery

Our sixth form fine art A level students visited the Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House, central London. The gallery, renowned for its extensive art collections, provided a valuable learning experience for the students. Accompanied by 6th form A Level art history teacher Ms Claire Vainker and Head of Art Mr David Adkins, the students explored the gallery's comprehensive collection, spanning from the Renaissance to the 20th century. The exhibits included paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and decorative arts.

A focal point of the gallery is its impressive Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. Notable works on display include Édouard Manet's A Bar at the Folies Bergère and Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. These pieces, along with works by Degas, Gauguin, Monet, Renoir, and Seurat, are showcased in the LVMH Great Room, one of Somerset House's largest spaces. The students also explored the Blavatnik Fine Rooms on the second floor, featuring works from the Renaissance to the 18th century. Highlights included pieces by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, Sandro Botticelli, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

This visit is part of a series of planned trips for the sixth form Art level students, contributing to their ongoing learning and critical understanding of fine art.
