Debate Competition
At Thames we firmly believe that debating is an essential life skill that helps children develop confidence, learn to think on their feet, and argue their point of view. It also teaches them how to research, structure an argument and articulate their thoughts clearly.
Last week we were invited to Emanuel School, Clapham, to take part in round two of our three-part debating series, having hosted round one at Thames in February.
Our hosts proposed the motion “This house believes that Roald Dahl books should only be published in their original form.” Debating on behalf of Thames were Aaron, Eric and Nicholas, aged 13, who admirably took on the tough challenge of advocating for censorship of these stories.
After a heated 40 mins, comprising 25 mins of speeches [each around 3 minutes] and 15 minutes of open floor debate and rebuttal, we are delighted to announce that Thames won – meaning we are now 1-1!
