Celebrating International Mother Tongue Week

Last week, students embraced the richness of linguistic diversity with a packed programme for International Mother Tongue Week. The week kicked off with an inspiring assembly led by guest speaker Faris Sanhaji, Foreign Languages PGCE Coordinator at Goldsmiths University. Fluent in four languages, Faris shared his experiences teaching in France, Spain, and the UK, highlighting the power of language and culture.

Throughout the week, pupils took centre stage with presentations in registration periods and Thursday’s assembly, sharing personal stories of growing up in multilingual households. Friday saw a colourful display of national costumes, with donations raised for Go MAD.

Food was also part of the celebration, with our caterers serving a different international cuisine each day. From Scottish haggis (introduced by Mr Orchardson in a kilt!) to Chinese, Indian, Jamaican, and Mexican dishes, every meal was a chance to experience global flavours.

The week was a wonderful reminder of the importance of languages in shaping our identities and connecting us to the wider world. Celebrating our diverse community has never been more meaningful!
